Elephants, Ducks and Paint!

"Mom, Frank ate the bones!"

What a great commercial.  Now I'm craving chicken!

Please excuse my long hiatus from the keyboard.  I've been lazy.  Hey I'm not going to sugarcoat it and say I've been too busy.  I mean seriously how much time does it really take to sit down and whip out a.....hey, maybe that's what's been taking up my time.
I'm always busy.  If you have been around this blog for awhile then you know I always have something in the works.
The garden is doing great.  The chickens and the duck are a sloppy messhole are doing fine as well.  Louie the duck is almost completely feathered out now.  He/She is a fine feathered specimen.  Kind of a messy fellow and still won't climb the ramp into the hen house by himself.  I have to go out every night around 9 pm and scoot his little but up the ramp.  He throws a fit every time.  Like I'm gonna eat him or something.  Last night he pooped in my hand.  Doesn't he know the old saying, " Never poop in the hand that feeds you?"
I can't begin to express how lucky I am to have made the choice to put wheels on the coop.  That little duck poops like an elephant.  If I don't move that thing everyday it would be.....well you get the picture.
I still don't know the sex of any of the three.  I'll have to wait for the chickens to mature and either start developing spurs and rooster crowing or laying eggs to find out which is who and what is which!
As far as the duck I'm not sure.  If it lays eggs then obviously its a female.  Other than that I don't know.  It's not like they have a penis sticking out the front of them.  They might poo like an elephant but they don't hang like one!  Enough of this fowl conversation.

My next big project has to deal with paint again.  Summer is here and that means I work exclusively outside.  So I will be painting the exterior of the house.  I'm starting with the back side first (that's what she said) only because I don't have the money to paint the entire thing at once (nor the energy).  The back of the house needs it the most as it has been subjected to westerly winds and tortuous sunshine.  It is very faded out.
I spent everyday this week, after working ten hours at my boring job, power washing and hand scrubbing the aluminum siding.  If you have ever run your hand down older aluminum siding you will notice your fingers will have a chalky substance on them.  This is actually the deteriorated paint from all the years of getting its ass kicked by mother nature.  This needs to come off before the new goes on.  It takes some effort but can be done.  I have the entire back of the house cleaned now.

We have chosen a light chocolate/tan color for the siding.  White for the window trim and in the front, where there are shutters, they will be a burgundy sort of color.

I am off work for a temporary shutdown.  I don't return until July 8th.  That should be plenty of time to paint one side of the house, however, it won't stop raining.  Everyday there is a chance of rain or thunderstorms.  So frustrating.  I'll get it done and of course I'll be posting pics.
Stay tuned and have a great weekend!

Updates on the Acre

Hello again!  Been a few days since I posted.  Been busy.

Duck and chickens are doing well.  I save all my vegetable scraps for them when I'm prepping dinner at night and toss it in their pen in the morning before.  They are getting big.
I filled up Remmi's pool the other day so Louie could go for a real swim.  Check it out!

Louie's first swim

Saturday I went down to my brother in laws to cut wood.  I cut for about 5 hours straight and ended up with a huge pile of wood.  Half is mine and half is his.  I have several trips to make to retrieve it all.

Sunday I decided to make my own wood shavings for the chicken pen.   Why buy what you can make?
This technique is called noodling because of the long noodle like shavings the chainsaw creates.  In order to do this you have to run the saw with the grain of the wood as you will see in the video.  If you cut any other way it just creates sawdust or tiny chips.  You also need a very sharp chain!

I use these to put inside the coop house to help with the droppings and also to give them a comfy nest area.

The chicken tractor has been working great so far.  I move it about 4 foot a day and then just tale the garden hose and wash all the droppings into the lawn.  I'm probably going to end up with a super green trail through my yard about 4 foot wide.  LOL

Sunday I also did some painting on my garden signs.  I still need to hang them in the garden.

I was going to build an arbor over the upper deck and re-build all the railings over the 4th of July week that I'm off but now am tossing the idea around of painting the back of the house instead.  I don't know.  My budget is tighter than an Ethiopian buffet so I can only afford to do one.  I can't even decide on a color.  My gawd it took me over a year to pick colors for the living room, kitchen and dining room.  Wonder how long this will take.  I just keep looking and waiting for that feeling I get when something is right.  I know it when I feel it.  A big silent "CLICK".

Other than that I've been tending the garden.  Corn is knee high and the tomatoes are taller than that.  I will be eating summer squash probably by the weekend.

Mosquitoes are awful thanks to all the rain we've had.  The last storm that came through dumped somewhere in the neighborhood of 5-6 inches in a couple hours.  Everything was flooded out big time.
This is my wheelbarrow and it is one of the bigger ones.  Over half full and it was sitting out in the open!

That's all for now!
Enjoy

A Garden Movie!

OK, OK...I know I promised you videos and have failed to follow through.
However to my credit I do have an excuse.  The secret service showed up at my house and apparently someone has hacked into my computer and has been making death threats on the President.  You talk about one freaked out dude.

They didn't just knock on the door either.  I'm talking a full scale assault like that shit you see on TV.  Except there was no guy crashing through my front window on a rope.  Thank goodness.  I don't have the money to replace that window!  They had their guns drawn and everything.  You talk about scared shitless!

Luckily for me they were able to open my computers hard drive and see that it wasn't actually me making the threats but some hacker that found a way to tie into the ATTN U-verse Internet we have.  What made me a target is next door to my house is a vacant lot that is owned by ATT.  They have a little telecommunications hut on that property.  Apparently some nerd was able to pry open the doors to the hut and put in some sort of wireless USB port or something like that.  It allowed him to access every one's ATT Internet account for like 25 sq miles.  Of course because I was the closest one and had the best signal he/she used my account.

ATT was called out and they were able to isolate the signal and tracked it right back to the little building where they discovered the little remote thingamajig the person had installed.  I curse technology sometimes but in this instance it saved my ass.  They still haven't been able to locate the person and in a search of all the other ATT properties discovered 3 more of these bug things.

So that is why I haven't been able to post any videos.  The secret service actually bought me a new laptop because they wanted to use mine for signal identification.  Mine has the footprint signal of the hackers computer and they think they can trace it that way and eventually find the bastard.

Sounds unbelievable I know but seriously that's not it at all.  LOL  The real reason is because my computer is using Windows Dinosaur as its main program and I can't download videos using the scanner wizard.  It took me awhile to figure it out but now I think I have it.  No secret service.  Sorry folks Park's closed!

Don't pay any attention to the three minute video comment either.  I should be able to copy longer videos in the future.  So here is my attempt at videography in the garden.  I hoped you like my story too

Bushman's Garden

Well it turns out that blogger doesn't want to download my videos anymore.  Or I'm just computer stupid.  Probably the second one.  I'm tired of messing around so I just created a YouTube video and linked it.  It's easier and they have a good editing feature that I can use once I become familiar with it.
Enjoy,

There was a farmer who had a .....

Today we started our new farm!  I went to the feed store to get a waterer and some feed for the new chickens that are coming tomorrow and they had these cute little ducklings.  Well it just so happens that my daughter Kaitlin loves ducks.  It also just so happens that it is her Birthday on Sunday.
The starts have aligned and now we have a duckling!  More pics soon!
