The Madness in the Fire....page 2

" Do you think there really is a God?", asked the small boy huddled close to his mother.
Her shawl, once a bright menagerie of color, thick and warm now clung to her cold bony shoulders.  The colors faded and worn.  She swept it up and over him trying to offer some bit of comfort and warmth.
He shucked it off.  His cheeks glowed a brighter red than the dismal fire they huddled next to.
"Huh papa?  Is there God and Jesus?"

"Of course there is Caleb, don't you ever doubt it'', the weathered man across the fire said.
"I don't think there is", the boy said sadly.
''Caleb!  Don't you ever say that"
"But Papa why would God let this happen?"
"Why would he let everything die?"
"It can't be true, it's not possible".

"Get some rest yong man.  Tomorrow is going to be a long day"
"I don't want to sleep, my dreams are bad.  I don't like them."

The young man left his mother's arms and unrolled his sleeping bag, nudged it close to the fire and climbed in.
The sun was just setting and the bright oranges and fiery reds of days gone by were no longer visible.  The sun would not penetrate the thick banks of grey clouds and the never ending fog that rolled off the ocean that shrouded everything in a cloak of sadness.

He closed his eyes and slipped away into the night.  The blackness.
His papa watched him.
He knew the boy's nightmares.  He was having them himself.
The sleeping bag next to the fire began to twitch and he reached for the boy but the woman stopped him.
"It might be good dreams", she said.

The blackness faded away as the boy slept by the fire.  Once again he was standing next to the ocean.  His house stood tall and proud behind him just like all the others in this little town on the California coast.
The manicured lawn and the beautiful flower gardens his mother tended to all fit into a perfect picture.  He smiled at the sight.  Perhaps it was all just a dream and this was his real life.  He turned to the ocean.  A walk on the beach and maybe a quick play in the surf before dinner.
As he walked along the tide line he began to notice the multitude of fish that had washed up on the sand.
He shielded his eyes and peered at the setting sun.  Waiting for the flash that comes when the sun melts below the horizon.

The sun was blood red and he thought it looked sad tonight.  He reached for it.  Just a gesture to say everything will be fine tomorrow.  He edged closer to the surf until his toes felt the coldness of the surging tide.  The air smelled acrid like the sun was smoldering.  A bitterness crossed his tongue and his eyes began to burn.  He walked further into the surf.  The waves lapped at his knees.  He waded out even further.  The sun called him, beckoning to warm him if he would just get close enough.  Soon he was waist deep and as the water reached his chest he began to feel the burning.  The sun needed him but the further he went the more the water burned.
He turned for the shore but when he looked the house was so far away.  Miles and miles.  An endless sea  between him and the safety of his mother.

He cried out and began to flounder haplessly towards the beach.

After what seemed like hours he reached knee deep water.  Screaming and crying for his mother he hauled himself onto the wet sand.  He burned everywhere, his eyes clouded like a pool overfilled with chlorine.  Struggling to his feet he looked down at his legs wondering why they burned so bad.  His mind kept telling him it was just a school of jellyfish but he knew better.  He knew this dream.
He had been here before
Looking down he saw the blisters.  Giant sacs of fluid that distorted any semblance of the shape of his legs.
They oozed and pulsed.  His knee exploded in a giant gush of fluid.
He looked up at the house and screamed.........

Beginnings

The idea I told you about the other day?  It's here.  I've started.  If this doesn't grab your attention than nothing will.  Here is a short piece of chapter one.
Enjoy!

Chapter 1
The madness in the fire
-----------------------

The tent glowed a pale green as the lantern inside cast its light through the colored canvas.  A smoldering campfire sent tendrils of smoke into the night air.

The moon, a mere crescent, did little to lighten up the surrounding woods.  Giant conifers towered high above the little tent blocking any trace of moonlight.  Tall ferns crowded each other, filling up any available space left by the towering trees.  Moss covered logs blocked any straight path through the forest.  It was a good place to camp.  A secure place.

Inside the tent lay a couple with their infant. A mere two weeks old and birthed inside the canvas walls in which they now slept.  They had been travelling, long arduous miles through uninhabitable land.  Always on the lookout for food and shelter but most of all people.  Danger lurked everywhere. They trusted no one.

She was sick.  He knew she needed medicine.  She knew there was none around for hundreds of miles.  It was not safe to make that long of a journey.  The sickness had taken its toll on her body.  She was thin, her face gaunt and stretched over her cheekbones.  He was afraid for the baby.  He had been nursing from his mother, but he knew her sickness coursed through the milk he drank from her breast every day.  There was no other option.  So he watched; watched his wife and son slowly wither away.  Tonight they slept.  Feeling secure in their makeshift camp they had not seen or heard any other people since entering the forest.

The ferns parted as a shadowy figure emerged.  Slowly the figure crept up on the encampment.  Others began to emerge from the blackness.  Soon the tent was surrounded.  Once they were within a few feet the lead figure raised his hand and the group descended upon the tent with a fury.
Within a few seconds, it was over.  The man and woman were bound and tied to a tree and the infant dangled by his leg, clutched in the grasp of the shadowy figure.  The other shadows began to stoke the fire and  became human as the fire cast its light.

"Well, well, what do we have here?" the man clutching the now wailing baby in his hand asked.
"We've been tracking you for days, you should have been more vigilant," he sneered at them.
"First things first, let's quiet this place down a bit and we'll have a go at the lady and then we can sit and discuss your future."
He winked at the couple and with a flick of his wrist tossed the wailing baby into the fire.

Once more from the top please!

It seems as though I am prone to undertaking things of which I have scant knowledge of therefore leading to a tumultuous grind of research and analysis.

So shall it come to pass.

Once again I find myself entwined in a land that has not been witnessed by my inner cartographer.

This time it is called......snowmobile.

I thought I had it all figured out only to have it die once again.

So I did what I always do.  Start from scratch.

First detail is research.  Countless hours on the internet reading.
Second detail is disassembly.  Removing everything right down to the last screw.
Third detail is cleaning.  I don't like working on dirty things. (Al here is your que)

That is where I am at the moment.

The snowmobile was running like a champ one day and then ka-poot.  The engine was flooding with fuel every time I tried to start it.  I think I may have the problem figured out but in the process a lot of fuel was spilled or leaked into the engine compartment and it needed to be cleaned out.  There was a bunch of debris in there from sitting around for so many years anyways.

I started by removing the carburetor, belt guard and belt.  Next was to remove the exhaust and engine.

Before pic

After removing the crankcase plug and impulse line fitting from the engine I was able to tip it on its side and let the excess fuel drain from the crank case.  It's not supposed to have fuel in there and I believe that is my main issue.  I think it happened from loading and unloading into the trailer.  I tipped the sled up really high to get it in the trailer and fuel must've flowed right into the engine and drained into the crank.  Also repeated attempts to start only worsened the condition.

Then while the engine was "drying"out I started to clean all the years of grease and grime and fuel out of the compartment.  Oven cleaner works well.  I couldn't degrease it at the local car wash because it was around 5 below zero at the time.  Got down to 12 below by the end of the night.
Here is the after

I also removed the entire dash and cleaned all the wires.

I did test the starter on the engine by removing it from the engine and holding the self grounding bracket to the negative battery terminal and then running a jumper wire to the stud on the starter and touching it to the positive post on battery.  It worked.  So I traced back the wires from the starter solenoid and discovered an inline fuse that was blown.  This could be why I couldn't get the electric start to work.

I took some time and cleaned up the engine.  The exhaust was loose and a lot of grime was covering that side of the engine.

When I took stuff off the sled I placed it on these sheets of cardboard and identified the parts with a sharpie.  That way there is no confusion when reassembling.  There is one circle of parts with a ? on it because I found those pieces laying in the bottom of the engine compartment.

Today I will disassemble the carb and clean it again. After that I will put everything back together again and see what happens.  After all we did just get 16" of fresh snow!

Big storm rolled in and we were inundated with snow.  Then the wind picked up to around 35 and the drifting started.  I have 4 foot piles of snow around the house.  I have shoveled the driveway 4 times already.

This is the window in my dining room that overlooks my garage.
The roof is about a foot below the bottom of the window.

I will get some more pics when I go out but it's cold out there.

The only way I could work on the sled was to have this thing right next to me.

Of course I had to do all fuel related things first before I could fire up the heater.
I knew a guy that was working on a sled with a heater going and the fuel caught on fire.  Burned him almost to death.  Safety first!

Even with the heater going the snow was still blowing in under the garage door.

This is my last week of vacation and back to work next week.  I won't be cutting any wood this week thanks to the snow.  We had about 6-7 inches on the ground already.  Can't even drive back into the woods without getting stuck now!
I have also been selected for jury duty this month!  Yeah!  NOT!  So far I haven't had to go in.  Lets hope they don't have any jury trials this month.

I just keep telling myself........

Who wants a moustache sno-cone?

I think I just might have an idea for a new story.  I haven't had many creative sparks lately but yesterday as I came in for lunch I browsed through Facebook and read an article that someone shared that kind of sparked my curiosity.
I might just play around with it.

But first things first!
I brought home that snowmobile that I mentioned in this post and have been riding it around quite a bit.  It has been fun but it wasn't as much fun as I thought it would be.  Then the other day after I used it to haul branches from the ice storm it quit and I could not get it to run again.
I tried several things without much success.  Finally after much internet researching and tearing the carburetor down and cleaning it twice I discovered a hole in the primer bulb in the fuel line and I also learned that the adjustment needles on the carb were way out of whack.  Also the gap on the spark plug was off.  The guy at the parts store told me it should be 0.28 when it fact it should have been 0.20.
So I re-set all the carb needles, fixed the plug gap, new primer bulb, fresh fuel and BINGO!
Now I have to tell you, before the sled was a little bit doggish.  It didn't like going through the snowdrifts or plow piles.  It smoked a lot and overall acted like it was 70 years old instead of 40.
"Well stupid", I said to myself, "that's because the whole fuel/air/ignition system was out of tune.

Now it runs like a champ!  Those snow drifts?  Yeah they are a lot funner now!  I also went from a top speed of about 35 mph to about 45 mph.  What a huge difference it made.  I also leaned up my oil to fuel mixture.  I was running about 32:1 fuel to oil and now I'm running 40:1.  A lot less smoke coming out of the exhaust.  Now I don't smell like a weed whip after I ride.

So now I sit here pecking away and I really should be getting ready for the day.  However, I am procrastinating a bit because, one it's still dark outside and two.......

It's cold  outside!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not sure about the whole real feel temp.  If it is negative 12 degrees then how can it feel like only negative 2?
I went outside to take care of the chickens and the ducks this morning around 6 and my nose was freezing up and within a minute I had a moustacheicicle.
I brought their water jug inside last night.  I knew my heater system wouldn't hold up.
Yesterday I added another string of Christmas lights to the inside of the tin.  Trying to raise the temps a bit but it can't compete with -12.

Today I am going out to cut some more wood and this time I am taking my snowmobile with me.  My friend has a lot more room to ride and I have thrashed my one acre.
It might be cold but it's never too cold to have a little fun!

Hopefully that plays and I don't know why it's sideways????

The New Year has commenced

What does that mean to me you ask?  Not much.  Another day.  I didn't stay up to wish it in.  It won't be offended by my lack of participation.  In fact I was in bed by 9:30.  It's not that I don't like a good party but I'm just not a new year type of guy.  Nothing against it, just not my digs.

I have been off work since Dec. 20th.  Our three week "Holiday" shut down at work.  Normally we just get 2 weeks but management has decided to lay us off for the extra week. "letting the supply chain catch up"

The big ice storm was very testing.  Running your household off of gasoline makes things a bit edgy. Especially when you have to pull an extra $200 out of your already depleted bank account to pay for all of that gas.  (not a good time of year for extra $ but I am extremely thankful for having the generator)

Not to mention the ice storm landed on the night of our annual Christmas Party (21st), couple that with trying to host Family Christmas dinner on the 25th (still on the generator).  Things get a bit stressful.  Then I was supposed to return to work for one day (23rd) to finish up some things and the ice storm killed that too because there was no power at work.  So there went that days pay!  That day was rescheduled for Monday the 30th but lo and behold there was a bomb threat in the building down the street so before we even began working the police showed up and escorted us off the property.  They closed down the whole block!
Luckily we went back on the 31st and finished up our stuff.  Which meant that I was awake and getting ready for work at 4:30 AM yesterday.

Add in all the firewood cutting, hauling, splitting and stacking that I've been doing.....I'm just too effin tired to try and stay up till midnight!   (See, it was going somewhere!)

Jenny over at Pearson Report had a few questions on what New Years meant for us and so I decided to answer them.  So glad to see you back in the blogosphere Jenny.  I've missed ya!
Here are her questions:

Did you accomplish what you had set out to do in 2013?
I think I did.  Even though my goals were set as I thought them up.  My garden was the first big thing I attempted.  That met with great success!  The house painting went well too.  I also was able to get the new wood stove installed along with the new chimney.  This was something that we had wanted since we moved into this house a couple years ago.  Financially?  Well our goal was to hang on and not sink ourselves into debt.  We had marginal success on that one.  The good news is we are stable and whittling away those pesky debts and 2014, barring any fiascos will see us in the black again!

Are you happy with your journey so far?
Yes!  It was a really good year all in all.  I have a really good life and am thankful that I am able to live as I do.  We work hard for what we have which makes it all the more enjoyable.

Will 2014 be “the year”? What does that even mean to you?
2014 will be a year of firsts I hope.  Our youngest has already committed to college and in the late summer we will become empty nesters as she goes off to find her place in the world!  We will be hosting her graduation open house here and although it will be a lot of work I am looking forward to showing off all of the effort that we have put into the house.  This little one acre has become my pride and joy as well as my hobby!

Did you make any resolutions? Have you made the same ones before?
I did not make any resolutions.  I don't think that waiting until the start of a new year is a good idea for resolutions.  Becoming a better person, a healthy person should be an ongoing effort.  I know I need to lose a few pounds, drink fewer beers and smoke fewer cigars and that is happening slowly but surely.  I have tried making resolutions in the past.  None have ever stuck!

Why is the first of January different than the first of any other month? Or is it?
The only thing Jan 1st means to me is that I can start anticipating my tax return and hopefully get enough $ back to buy my wife the new living room furniture she so desperately wants deserves!

And… last but not least…
If you could change one thing about “you” what would it be?
That is an easy one.  I wouldn't change a thing because then I would be someone else!
I like being myself because everyone else is already taken!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks for the blog topic Jenny!
I was supposed to cut some more wood today but it is 11 degrees outside and snowing.
I may just hang tight today.  Going to be 5 below tonight!

Happy New Year everyone!
