O is for Dreams

Today’s post is brought to you by the letter O and the category Poetry

Some years ago I awoke from my slumber in the wee hours of the morning.  I had been dreaming.  For the life of me I cannot remember the dream, but I knew it was the best dream I had ever had.

I was saddened by the loss and tried in vain to recollect but to no avail.  The only thing that ever came out of it was this poem.

Ode to a Dream

Shafts of brilliance
Gleam at my eyes
And I awake in a start,
My dream must not die

I tried in vain
To return to yonder
But all I could do was
Lay there and ponder

I must not let her go
I shall search for that love
To the ends of the earth
and the heavens above

If all else fails
and my search empties out.
Then I shall retreat into myself,
for it is there, no doubt.

Waiting patiently,
to spread its wings.
Then taking flight,
through my soul shall it sing.

Easing the aches,
and brightening the way.
Warming the night,
And calming the day.

On its feathers,
the sun shall gleam.
For it carries but one thing,
and that is the dream.

  1. You may have lost the dream but you created a really beautiful poem.

  2. I love this poem, Jeff. It's playful, fun, a bit sad and it reads like a Dr. Seuss rhyme - the most brilliant poetic genius of all time. So like Alex said, a great work came out of it, and you captured the sentiment well. I've been there too. I think "I'll definitely remember that. It's so specific and striking" and before I move off my bed, it's gone.

    1. The best (or worst) thing is that it was quite possibly the greatest dream ever and my heart felt broken when I lost it.

  3. Ditto to Alex's comment - beautiful indeed. And, like Robyn says, there's a playful quality to it.
I try hard to remember dreams and fall flat too. There should be a button, on the sides of our heads that we can press to "save" - hahaha.

Great O post - love the title too!

    1. Thanks, Dani. I love poetry and I am a rhymer. Kinda goes hand in hand. I like the poem to roll off the tongue.

    1. It was my best attempt. At least now I can remember through the poem that which I forgot.

  6. Beautiful sentiment. I know what it is to try and catch a dream that's just out of reach.

    1. Thanks J.L. I felt I owed it that much. Like a letter to a girl who has just broken my heart it is my way of asking it/her to come back

  7. That is a great poem to express a dream. There are dreams I've had like that, wishing they would go on and I hadn't woken up and then there is those dreams when I get mad about something with hubby and wake up mad at him for no reason :)
